Welcome Back Sunday

Emmanuel Episcopal Church invites the community to join us for our annual Welcome Back Sunday Service and Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM. This beloved tradition marks the official start of Emmanuel's 2025-2026 program year with a morning full of blessings, community connection, and celebration.

The special service will feature the popular Blessing of the Backpacks, where students of all ages bring their school bags and working professionals bring their briefcases to receive a blessing for the upcoming academic and professional year. "It's such a joyful way to send our children, teens, college students, and working adults into the new year knowing they carry our prayers and support with them," says The Reverend Brett Johnson, rector.

This year's celebration includes several exciting highlights:

  • Blessing of "You Belong" Sign – The congregation will dedicate a new sign that shows the outside community what we know to be true inside, everyone belongs, no exceptions!

  • Parish Group Photo – Capturing the whole Emmanuel family together as they launch into a new year of ministry and mission

  • Welcome Back Picnic – A feast featuring deli platters, chicken and tuna salad, various green and pasta salads, and delicious desserts, with outdoor seating available weather permitting and plenty of time for reconnecting after the summer

The event is designed to welcome both longtime members and newcomers to the Emmanuel community. "Whether you've been part of our church family for decades or you're just curious about who we are, Welcome Back Sunday is the perfect time to experience Emmanuel's warmth and hospitality," Johnson continues.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Main and Bryant Streets in Wakefield, is known for its diverse and welcoming community. The church's regular Sunday worship services resume their academic year schedule with services at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM beginning the following Sunday, September 14.

All are invited to attend this free community celebration. No reservations required – just bring your backpack and your appetite for good food and great company!
